                         "NORWEGIAN DUNKIRK, 1991"

It's 1991 and the history is repeating itself. With the bulk
of the United States' ground forces surprised while preoccupied in
the Middle East, the armored divisions of the Red Army swiftly gobbled
up most of Western Europe in the first month of war. Germany has been
crushed, and all but westernmost France has capitulated. England
struggles on, but her once proud RAF has been decimated in the new
Battle of Britain. Nearly all her airbases are unusable, and the
undefended North Sea has become increasingly lethal for NATO
shipping. A large fraction of the British army has been holding
off the Red horde in Norway, but lack of air and naval support stymied
the operation. Now, like Dunkirk, the Norwegian arm of the British
army has its back to the sea, and only a rag-tag fleet of hastily
assembled transports is available to bring the troops safely home
to perhaps fight again.

Almost all of the remaining British fleet will participate in
this rescue effort. Expect no help from the US Navy - they are
preoccupied in the battles for southern France and the Persian
Gulf. The Falklands were a mere exercise compared with what you
and your men face now. You will be dependant upon your
carrier-based Harriers for air cover, and you will need to keep them
patrolling round-the-clock. The Soviets will be throwing long range
bombers and attack aircraft at your formation, and several first line
Soviet submarines were reported in this area. We do not know the
location or condition of the Soviet surface fleet. Expect your
bases and carriers to be attacked at any time - the Soviets know that
without air cover, your ships stand little chance. And since the
Soviets were willing to use large numbers of tactical nuclear weapons
to achieve their European breakthrough, you may expect a nuclear
attack at any time.

You must withdraw your ships from Norway, and get them safely
into the Atlantic, out of range of the Soviet bridgehead at Keflavik.
The Admiralty "suggests" that your task force hug the western coast
of Scotland as you steam south - stay further out to sea at your own
risk. Extricate at least 4 transports and one carrier for minimum
victory. Total victory can be achieved - but the Soviets have
a better shot at it than you do! Succeed, and Knighthood and the
tender charms of the newly widowed Princess Di await you. Fail,
and the icy waters of the North Atlantic will be your only comfort.
